You A top lacrosse ace is at the centre of a sponsorship storm after landing a deal with controversial booze firm Buckfast.
Scotland star Myles Bonner, 25, wears gear plastered with the tonic wine’s logo in return for help with his travel expenses.
But the tie-in was last night slammed by Labour MSP Elaine Smith, whose Lanarkshire constituency is counting the cost of booze-related mayhem.
The Coatbridge MSP said: “This is a product whose misuse has blighted communities and has a proven link with criminal behaviour. It is worrying that Buckfast can generate publicity in a sporting environment.”
Buckfast spokesman Stewart Wilson insisted: “The purpose of our sponsorship is not for advertising. It is to help the guy and encourage more businesses to do it too.
“We support a lot of individuals and groups up and down the country.”
A 2010 study showed cops in Strathclyde mentioned Buckfast in 5,000 crime reports over three years.
