Bucky in love! Scottish couple’s Buckfast-themed wedding is tonic wine lover’s dream … right down to the cake

They say weddings should be personal for each couple, with the glowing bride and groom filling the day with things that make them both happy.

In this case, the couple chose their favourite tonic wine as the theme for their big day – right down to the cake.

Karen Hunter and her husband Colin surprised guests at their wedding on May 25 when they unveiled Buckfast favours and a specially made Bucky-themed cake.

Karen said: “My husband loves Buckfast. Both of us don’t eat cake so I suggested we went for the fun factor and instead of having a traditional cake go for a cake that looks like a wedding cake at the front but at the back it’s Buckfast.”

The couple went to Westcoast Cakes in Largs to have the cake made, requesting something similar to the curtain superhero themes that have been popular lately.

A picture of the cake was shared on a Buckfast fan page on Facebook the following day. It has so far received over 2,000 reactions, almost 2,000 comments and has been shared over 750 times.

“Colin was delighted as that’s just him,” said Karen. “It’s the only drink that he likes.”

They even took swigs of the drink throughout the ceremony to calm their nerves.

Karen explained: “We also decided to have Buckfast favours for the men and Colin was presented with a personalised hip flask filled with chilled Buckfast (the only way he can drink it).

“He had a few swigs before I came down the aisle and then when we were signing the register he managed to persuade me to take a swig, to delighted cheers from guests.”

Colin’s best man also gifted him a personalised bottle of Buckfast, as a present for taking on the role of best man two years ago.

The bar also got involved, bringing in Buckfast to sell as a sophisticated glass of wine or the slightly-less-classy Bucky bomb shot.

While Karen doesn’t quite share the same love for Buckfast as her husband – she says it’s “not my cup of tea” – she was over the moon to see everyone get involved and enjoy the theme, making their big day a huge success.

She said: “The guests loved it, they couldn’t believe that I did that.

“But it was all about Colin and I, and I knew he would love the idea.

“Even my mum and dad tried the Buckfast miniatures, only a taste but it was so much fun.”
