We were delighted to find out that this Saturday, May 13th is World Buckfast Day! Someone actually decided to designate a day to this infamous drink.
The drink is hugely popular in Scotland and Ireland and has also been linked to high crime levels in the UK. It was originally brewed by the Benedictine monks at Buckfast Abbey and sold with the slogan: “Three small glasses a day, for good health and lively blood”.
After 1927 the Abbey lost its license and allowed others to distribute it on their behalf and since then the monks in Buckfastleigh have been making a very nice profit over the years from it’s sales.
Michael Onk, creator of the day said:
“As stated on our Facebook page this day can be celebrated anywhere and in anyway as long as people are responsible and have a good time.
“Parties and promotions range from Sydney to Cyprus to Belfast to Jersey.”
He initially set it up as National Buckfast Day but it became so popular all over the world that he changed the name to World Buckfast Day.
There are many ways to drink Buckfast… This one’s a bit out there!
So wherever you are in the world, grab your friends and RESPONSIBLY enjoy some Buckfast this Saturday!
